Blairsville Underground Railroad is Expanding!

The Blairsville Area Underground Railroad has entered into a long-term lease agreement with Blairsville Borough for the Historic Blairsville Armory. According to Denise Jennings, the organization’s volunteer director, the group has been planning the expansion for the last few years. “Barb Peace, our Vice President, and I have been working with CMU professor Dr. Courtney Novosat for the last three years to develop a professional proposal for the use of the armory. It is an economic win for the region, a win for history, a win for the borough who no longer wanted the responsibility of maintaining the building, and a win for our organization.”

Jennings indicated that they anticipate moving their current exhibits to the armory by late June, 2026, with the expansion happening incrementally. “It’s an ambitious timeline and dependent on funding, but we’d love to be up and running by March, 2027, “ said Jennings.
