Freedom Seeker Series

Braxton Jackson, AT Moorhead, Dr. Robert Mitchell, Jacob Green

Levity Brewing Company has partnered with the Blairsville Area Underground Railroad to help share this amazing history.

In 2021, Levity brewed and canned 4 distinct beers in the Freedom Seeker Beer series which were sold as a 4-pack and available on tap. The initial offering featured the Hollingsworth Hefeweizen, Catharine Black Hazy IPA, Atcheson IPA, and Johnston Scotch Ale. Each can featured an image and story of a freedom seeker or conductor. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Blairsville Underground Railroad History Center.

The 2023 Freedom Seeker beers honor the memory of freedom seekers: Braxton Jackson, who fled his bondage in Richmond, VA during the Civil War and settled in Blairsville, PA, and Jacob Green, whose abduction in Hollidaysburg, PA nearly led to war between Virginia and Pennsylvania. In 2023, we honor conductors Dr. Robert Mitchell, abolitionist, station master, and Indiana, PA physician, and Alexander “AT” Moorhead, teenage conductor and, later, newspaper editor who preserved the stories of Indiana County’s involvement in the UGRR. This year, our freedom seekers and conductors are paired with a vanilla cream ale and ESB (extra special bitters). The 2023 series is available for purchase after June 20, 2023.

The 2025 Freedom Seeker Beers honor Freedom Seekers Bowie Johnston and Charles Brown. Johnston escaped his bondage and travelled on the Indiana County UGRR network to Canada, but returned to live with conductors Frank & Katy Coleman in their homes in New Florence and Blairsville. Brown self-emancipated from Hardy Co., VA, and lived openly in Indiana County until he was kidnapped in the fall of 1845.

Conductors Graff and Gamble operated in different geographical areas of the county, but shared strong abolitionist beliefs. See our conductors’ stories by clicking on our “Indiana County UGRR” tab.
